The man accused of killing two St. Albert seniors is back in custody on assault charges.
Travis Vader was arrested in St. Albert on the evening of Feb. 12. St. Albert RCMP said Vader was taken into custody without incident after police were called to the home where he had been serving house arrest.
On Tuesday, Cpl. Laurel Kading said RCMP would not release any more details on the charges. More information will become available when Vader appears in court in March, she said.
"We are being very sensitive to what we release in this matter," she said.
Vader is charged with assault and failing to comply with a condition on his recognizance to keep to peace and be of good behaviour.
A judicial interim hearing was held which determined that Vader will be released once he is able to comply with the conditions of the hearing. These conditions include electronic monitoring. Vader is due back in St. Albert court on the new charges March 9.
Murder charges
Vader, 42, had been on house arrest since Dec. 19, 2014, after being rearrested on double first-degree murder charges of Lyle, 78, and Marie McCann, 77.
The couple went missing in July 2010 on a trip to British Columbia to visit family. The burned-out shell of their motorhome was discovered at a campground near Edson a few days later. The McCanns were declared legally dead in July 2011, and their bodies have never been found.
Vader was formally charged in the disappearance of the St. Albert couple nearly two years after he was named a suspect. The charges were stayed in March 2014, a few weeks before Vader was to face a jury trial. He was rearrested in December and ordered to remain under house arrest.
Earlier this year, a new date was set for his murder trial, starting March 7, 2016.
The McCann family still has a $60,000 reward available for anyone with information that can help find their parents. Anyone with information on the location of Lyle and Marie McCann should call the RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
