EDMONTON - Travis Vader is slated to appear in an Edmonton courtroom on Tuesday afternoon, to once again face two charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of St. Albert seniors Lyle and Marie McCann in July 2010.
The murder charges against Vader had been stayed by the Crown earlier this year, in a surprise move barely a month before his trial was set to begin in April.
After spending more than four years in custody on unrelated charges — for which he was ultimately found not-guilty — Vader was released from custody in early October. He had remained out of the public eye until Friday, when the RCMP announced in an evening news release that Vader had been arrested, and that the stayed murder charges had been recommenced.
The Crown has a year to recommence stayed charges, but it is rarely done.
RCMP say Vader was held in custody over the weekend, and will make his first court appearance in Edmonton on Tuesday at 1:30, in Court of Queen’s Bench.
Lyle McCann, 78, and his wife Marie, 77, were last seen gassing up their motorhome in St. Albert on July 3, 2010. Their motorhome was later found burning in an isolated campground near Edson. Though their bodies have never been located, they have been declared victims of homicide.
