Senior killer Travis Vader back in court to face charges he received while out on bail
Convicted killer Travis Vader is back in court to face charges laid against him while he was out on bail during his trial for two counts of second-degree murder in spring 2016.
Vader was sentenced to life in prison on Jan. 26, after being found guilty of manslaughter in connection to the 2010 deaths of St. Albert couple, Lyle and Marie McCann, aged 78 and 77.
During the four-day trial expected to begin Tuesday morning, Vader will face allegations that he failed to comply with and breached conditions of his release, as well as one count each of breaking and entering and possession of stolen property.
At the time of the arrest in May 2016, police said Vader breached his bail conditions by allegedly failing a drug test and contacting a Crown witness from his murder trial. Police also alleged he was involved in a copper wire and truck theft at a west-end industrial park when they arrested him.
When he sentenced Vader to life in prison in January, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Denny Thomas pronounced that Vader would serve a life sentence, be ineligible for parole for seven years, and be under a 10-year weapons prohibition and lifetime restricted weapons prohibition.
After the May 2016 arrest, Vader was denied bail and has been in custody since.
The day after receiving his sentence, Vader’s lawyers filed an appeal in which Vader asked for his conviction to be set aside and for him to receive either a stay of proceedings or an acquittal.
If a new trial is ordered, Vader asks it be by judge and jury.
