Every day in the newsroom, we get documents called News Releases from people or organizations looking for publicity for their event, or a chance to rebut what another political party has said or maybe it’s the answer to a societal ill.

We then phone or visit those people and record their comments for use on the news.

Sometimes, the person involved is too shy, or doesn’t think their voice would sound good on the air, and they ask us to just have our reporter say what they have written down.

We don’t like to do that, because it doesn’t have the impact the actual person’s voice would have.

In fact, that piece of audio is called an "actuality".

Nowhere is that more important in the next week, than in the decision in the Travis Vader trial.

The media is asking for just one camera in court, to live-stream the ruling from Judge Denny Thomas in person, in his words, with his inflections, coming from his mouth.

He is deciding whether that will happen.

We are overwhelmed with well-rehearsed actors on TV playing all the parts in a courtroom drama.

I say it’s time to get real.
