Vader bail review postponed

Accused murderer Travis Vader remains in custody after a Friday-morning bail hearing was postponed.

Defence lawyer Nathan Whitling and Crown prosecutor Eman Joumaa agreed to postpone the matter until May 24, at which point a new date for the bail hearing will be determined.

Vader currently faces first-degree murder charges in the deaths of St. Albert couple Lyle and Marie McCann, but had until May 10 been out on bail with strict conditions.

This most recent bail review was prompted by allegations Vader breached his conditions by contacting a trial witness and by being in possession of a non-prescription drug.

He was arrested May 10 on those RCMP charges, and was also charged by Edmonton police with possession of a stolen truck and theft of copper wire valued at less than $5,000.

Joumaa told provincial court Judge Fern Le Reverend the Crown was proceeding by indictment on both charges.

This will be the second bail review in as many months for Vader, who had his bail conditions altered mid-trial after showing up late for court several times, in breach of a condition that he attend court when required.

His defence lawyer for the trial, Brian Beresh, is expected to finish presenting his evidence by May 27, after which closing arguments will be scheduled.
