EDMONTON - The man charged with killing St. Albert couple Lyle and Marie McCann was granted bail for a third time Thursday.
Travis Vader, 43, has been in custody since early March, when he was arrested and charged with breaking his previous bail conditions.
Then, Vader was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and six counts of breaching court-ordered conditions. RCMP said Vader’s truck was discovered in Carrot Creek, about 160 kilometres west of Edmonton.
Vader and his family are from the area, which is also a key location in the murder investigation into the deaths of the McCanns, who disappeared in July 2010 while travelling to visit their daughter in B.C.
The couple, aged 78 and 77, were last seen in St. Albert filling up their motorhome with gas. The couple’s green 2006 Hyundai Tucson SUV was later found in the bush off the highway near Carrot Creek. Their burned motorhome was found at the Minnow Lake campground, about 45 minutes south.
Once released, Vader will be electronically monitored through an ankle bracelet and must remain in an approved residence during a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.
Crown prosecutors consented to Vader’s release.
Since he was granted bail the first time in December, Vader has also been charged with assaulting his mother’s boyfriend.
Vader’s trial on the McCann charges is scheduled for March 2016.
